Luxury traveller expert in the making: How to snag the best deals at luxury vacation spots

[this is good]
Thanks for this advice. My husband and I are 'reformed' backpackers (ie, too old and fussy to stay in low budget accommodation anymore). We also now travel with two kids so like to have at least a bit of comfort (and a pool!) on our trips with them. On our recent trip to Malaysia, we mostly stayed in mid-range kind of resorts but did splash out on a couple of nights at the KL Hilton after reading some positive reviews on Tripadvisor. One of the things that made this hotel 'luxurious' for us was the attitude of the staff working there. Although we turned up looking a bit grubby after a day's driving and elephant riding and the kids not always 100% well behaved in the hotel restaurants etc, the staff always seemed genuinely friendly and helpful and not in obsequious kind of way. Kids also voted the Hilton pool the best in the whole of Malaysia.
